Welcome to 2009 Sharp Lends a Hand

It started with San Diegans who wanted to make a difference. Thousands of people visited Sharp.com to learn about Sharp Lends a Hand, our initiative to unite our 14,000 employees to provide the people power — the volunteer labor — for community service projects that promise real change in San Diego.

More importantly, San Diegans took the time to share their ideas for how we can create real change. From visiting homebound seniors to building homes for those in need, amazing ideas flowed in to our inbox. Thank you for your passion.

Then, we combed through the submissions and selected the top projects that met our criteria of supporting the health and well being of San Diego in a broad, positive way. Sharp's employees voted for their favorite community service projects and we narrowed down our selection to our top choices.

Sharp employees will complete the following projects by Sept. 30, 2009:

San Diego River Cleanup — June 27
Join I Love a Clean San Diego (ILACSD) and the San Diego River Park Foundation to beautify an important piece of San Diego’s watershed. Go with the flow and remove litter and debris while we clean up a particularly dirty section of the San Diego River. Bring your closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, a hat and extra water and we’ll bring the rest.

National Stand Down for Homeless Veterans — June 26, July 10, 11, 15 – 20
A huge success for Sharp Lends a Hand 2008, Stand Down for Homeless Veterans is a three-day event sponsored by the Veterans Village of San Diego. Stand Down provides community-based social services and helps homeless veterans “combat” life on the streets. Sharp Lends a Hand will provide needed medical attention and organize and distribute clothing to veterans.

July 4th Holiday Beach Cleanup — July 6
Help put the sparkle back in San Diego beaches following the revelry of July 4 by volunteering for the holiday beach cleanup. While all supplies will be provided, bring extra water and wear sunscreen and a hat so you don’t fizzle out.

Habitat for Humanity Building Blitz — Aug. 10 – 14
Habitat for Humanity coordinates a summer Building Blitz in which construction companies donate the materials and work to construct homes for needy San Diego families. Sharp Lends a Hand volunteers will support the builders by directing traffic, keeping the site clean and organizing workers.

San Diego Food Bank — Aug. 13 – 15
The San Diego Food Bank feeds people in need throughout San Diego County, advocates for the hungry and educates the public about hunger-related issues. Sharp Lends a Hand volunteers will inspect and sort donated food, assemble boxes and clean the warehouse.
