2014 Sharp Lends a Hand Projects

Sharp HealthCare is proud to announce this year's projects for Sharp Lends a Hand. Our employees submitted more than 25 amazing ideas, and the following were chosen.

\\shcsd\sharp\spe\profiles\milji\Desktop\Habitat-Logo-   Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. The organization builds and repairs houses all over the world using volunteer labor and donations. Partner families purchase these houses through no-profit, no-interest mortgage loans or innovative financing methods. Sharp volunteers will work alongside construction professionals to complete this home for the selected family.
The San Diego Food Bank   San Diego Food Bank
The San Diego Food Bank feeds people in need throughout San Diego County and advocates for and educates the public about hunger-related issues. Over the past four years, Sharp Lends a Hand volunteers have inspected and sorted donated food, assembled boxes and cleaned the warehouse. Sharp Lends a Hand volunteers will continue their work with the San Diego Food Bank by inspecting and sorting donated food.
\\shcsd\sharp\spe\profiles\milji\Desktop\SD-River-Park-Logo-   San Diego River Park Foundation
The San Diego River Park Foundation is dedicated to creating a better quality of life for our community through the creation of a 52-mile, river-long system and improving the health of this important waterway. Its programs, projects and events are aimed at connecting people to the San Diego River and empowering the community to steward and celebrate our historic river. Volunteer activities include trail maintenance, watering, pruning and other light gardening projects.

These bicoastal events empower paraplegics and quadriplegics to experience the freedom of mobility by riding a wave with the assistance of adaptive equipment and the support of hardworking volunteers. They Will Surf Again has the unique ability to engage and bridge the able-bodied and disabled communities, as they collaborate to push the bounds of possibility for those with spinal cord injuries. Sharp volunteers will assist with set up, registration, equipment distribution, meals/hospitality, breakdown and will assist surfers on land and in the shallow water.
Stand Down   Stand Down for Homeless Veterans
One of Sharp Lends a Hands’ flagship volunteer efforts, this three-day event for San Diego’s homeless veterans was a huge success with Sharp volunteers for the past four years. Stand Down provides community-based social services for veterans without permanent residence. Sharp Lends a Hand volunteers will provide much-needed medical attention, organize and distribute clothing and provide other volunteer assistance as needed.
 USS Midway

USS Midway
Every day, visitors to the USS Midway Museum enter a floating city at sea and walk in the footsteps of 225,000 Midway sailors who served our country and upheld the American ideals of strength, freedom and peace. To keep the decks of this legendary aircraft carrier clean, volunteers are needed to complete a foreign object damage (FOD) walk-down. FOD walk-downs are routine activities on active aircraft carriers to prevent debris from damaging aircraft engines. At this event, Sharp Lends a Hand volunteers will mimic a walk-down and use hand tools and vacuums to clear the decks of debris. A museum docent will provide historical context and share his experiences.
