Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is one of fewer than 150 hospitals in the U.S. to offer a comprehensive bloodless medicine and surgery center.

Today, a growing number of forward-thinking physicians, hospitals and other health care professionals accept bloodless medicine and surgery as a modern medical specialty. Medical studies have shown the bloodless approach to speed healing while reducing the risk of infection. Realizing the potential health benefits of a bloodless approach, hospitals like Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center now offer bloodless medicine centers and programs as part of their overall approach to patient care. Since its inception in May 2003, more than 500 patients have been successfully cared for with blood conservation techniques.

How Does Bloodless Surgery Work?
Bloodless medicine and surgery is an advanced way of providing care without using blood transfusions. Blood loss during surgery is normal, and bloodless medicine utilizes progressive techniques before, during and after surgery to minimize that blood loss. This sophisticated approach allows physicians to care for patients without using donor blood because an ample supply of the patient’s own blood is retained.
