Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the United States, accounting for 30 percent of all cancer deaths. It has a 5-year survival rate of less than 16 percent, significantly lower than the survival rate for other common cancers, including breast, colon and prostate, which are all 90 percent or greater.
With a recent recommendation from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Sharp HealthCare offers annual CT scans to current and former smokers meeting certain criteria. CT scans are an effective tool in discovering cancer at an earlier stage. Through early detection, patients can benefit from improved treatment options and better outcomes.
CT Scan Qualifications
CT scans are endorsed by the American Medical Association, American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society, American Lung Association and American Cancer Society. However, candidates must have a physician referral and meet one of the following criteria:
- Age 55 to 80 with a smoking history of 30 or more pack years and less than 15 years of smoking cessation
- Age 50 or older with a smoking history of 20 pack years or more and one additional risk factor, such as family history, disease history of COPD or pulmonary fibrosis, radon exposure or other occupational exposure
Schedule a Screening
If you or a loved one meet the above criteria and are interested in scheduling a screening, please contact San Diego Imaging Chula Vista at 619-796-7910. Please note that not all insurance plans cover this screening. To determine eligibility, please contact your insurance provider.
Sharp's experienced team of radiologists, radiographers and additional staff work together to give patients a five-star experience with timely scheduling, the latest imaging techniques and prompt reporting of results.
