Journal Entry 14: Feeling the Difference

Aug. 16–23, 2009

My week started off with an MRI on Monday. Before my transplant, I had a pacemaker/defibrillator implanted and couldn't have MRIs. Several years ago I broke my back in two places and last year I had a tumor removed from my spine. My neurosurgeon, Dr. Lance Altenau, could only order CT scans. Now he'll have a better look at what's going on with my spine and nerves from the MRI report.

At my Cardiac Rehab Classes I've been increasing my "grade level" on the treadmill and my "watts" on the bike. I've been lifting weights to help strengthen my upper body and arms. What a difference I'm feeling from when I first started! I'm also preparing myself for the San Diego Heart Walk on Sept. 19. Several of my family and friends are supporting me through donations or walking with me! This really motivates me to try harder in my cardiac rehab classes.

This weekend was full of birthday celebrations! We started off by celebrating Larry's 50th birthday at the Brigantine Restaurant in Coronado with our friends Todd and Chris. On Saturday, we celebrated my father's birthday at Murrietta's Restaurant and Sunday we celebrated our niece Michelle's birthday at Sho-gun. After all this celebrating, I need to go on a major diet!

As my third month grows near, I'm always thanking God and my donor for my new life! Follow more of Debbie's heart transplant journey.
