Prominent government agencies and special interest groups that evaluate and report on the quality of care provided by hospitals are noted below. We’ve also provided links to assist you in choosing a physician and find additional health-care related information.


Choosing a Hospital

CalHospitalCompare.org
Offers a comprehensive online report card that provides consumers with information about the quality of care provided by California hospitals.

Hospital Compare
Allows consumers to compare hospitals based on quality, patient satisfaction, and Medicare payment and volume. Site administered by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The Joint Commission
Provides comparison information on hospital quality measures, services, type of accreditation, and specialty awards received. Site administered by The Joint Commission, a major hospital accrediting organization.

The Leapfrog Group
Offers quality and patient safety information voluntarily sent by hospitals.

Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
Provides information on state health care programs and studies managed by OSHPD.


Choosing a Physician

American Medical Association (AMA)
Provides information on board-certified physicians who have been trained in specialized areas of medicine.

Medical Board of California
Licenses, investigates and disciplines medical doctors. Offers information about physcian's credentials, disciplinary action received and malpractice judgments.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
Supports research to improve health care quality. Their website contains patient education on many health care topics.

State of California Office of the Patient Advocate
Educates consumers about their HMO health care rights and responsibilities and compiles an annual report card on the state's HMOs and medical groups.
