As the busiest emergency department (ED) per bed in all of San Diego County, the ED at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center sees approximately 50,000 patients every year. To better serve these patients, the ED is undergoing a $12 million expansion, which began in November 2010, that will more than double its current capacity and increase its size from 8,000 square feet to 14,500 square feet, as well as provide a more comfortable atmosphere for patients and their loved ones.
This expansion, made possible thanks to generous donors, caregivers and volunteers, as well as the Sharp HealthCare organization, will occur in three phases and is anticipated to reach completion in early 2012. Once complete, the new ED will feature a number of upgrades, including:
- Additional Rapid Medical Evaluation (RME) space for patients with minor, acute medical complaints
- An increase from 20 to 48 operational beds
- A renovated lobby with large, west-facing windows and comfortable seating
- Increased patient privacy

While our facility will change, the personalized care, clinical excellence and advanced technology provided by our multidisciplinary team of emergency caregivers will not. We ask for your patience and understanding during this exciting time of growth and invite you to visit this page regularly for updates.
Construction on the expansion of the ED at Sharp Chula Vista is moving along swiftly. The area in this photo will include new patient beds, the renovated waiting area and a more convenient patient drop-off area.
With Phase 1 of the expansion finishing this month, the exciting improvements being made to the ED at Sharp Chula Vista can now be seen. As part of this phase, the ED's entrance, lobby and triage and admitting areas have all been renovated. In addition, interior painting, flooring and cabinetry are close to completion.
