Why Choose Sharp Chula Vista's Intensive Care Unit?

What to Expect at Sharp Chula Vista's Intensive Care Unit

Having a loved one in the ICU can be frightening for the patient and family. Visitors in the ICU are often overwhelmed by the bright lights, equipment and noises in the unit but you must remember that they are associated with the advanced technology we use to care for patients. Expect nurses to ask questions about pain at regular intervals — it is important for the patient to tell the nurse as soon as pain begins so that medicine can be administered for comfort.

We encourage you to get to know the individuals caring for your family member. Find out their names and how to contact them. Do not be afraid to ask questions or share your concerns. Below are other suggestions to make your experience in the ICU more comfortable:

  • Encourage all family member to write questions and needs on a notepad and delegate one person to be the spokesperson for the family to address questions with the medical staff
  • If your family member is unable to communicate, share with us what you think they may need
  • Leave a number where the staff can contact you when you are not in the medical center
  • Take care of yourself — your family member is relying on your strength and support

Our Intensive Care Unit Team

Nurses in the intensive care unit are specially trained to care for critically ill patients, with most of their time spent monitoring patients and giving special bedside care. Since patients often require specialized therapy to help with breathing, the ICU has its own respiratory therapists. The nurse manager and the clinical nurse specialist are responsible for ensuring that the ICU runs smoothly and that each patient receives the highest quality of care. There are many other important team members who are also involved in the care of each patient — including social workers, nutritionists and pharmacists.
