After noticing an alarming trend among his pathology reports — that women with breast cancer didn't understand their diagnoses — Dr. Omid Bakhtar, a pathologist affiliated with Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, decided that something needed to be done and created Meet the Pathologist.
Meet the Pathologist is a series of meetings intended to teach women with breast cancer how to understand their pathology reports, which include important information like the severity of disease, if it has spread and what kind of treatment is needed.
During the bimonthly meetings, Dr. Bakhtar and Angiolina Mohi, MSC, IMF, who coordinates the hospital's Breast Cancer Patient Navigator Program, answer questions and spend time with patients one-on-one.
"Dr. Bakhtar explains things in a way patients can understand," says Mohi. "There's a lot of information out there, but many women don't know the right questions to ask."
In addition to these meetings, other free or deeply discounted services offered to breast cancer patients through the Breast Cancer Patient Navigator Program at Sharp Chula Vista include transportation, wigs and prostheses and counseling.
"Breast cancer is hard enough to deal with on its own," says Mohi. "When you factor in all of the needs that arise after being diagnosed, life can seem overwhelming. We're here to help make things easier for our patients."
Meet the Pathologist sessions are held the first Wednesday of every other month from 2:30 to 4 pm. To find out when the next session will be held, please visit Meet the Pathologist.
