Volunteering at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is a unique opportunity for students. Hospital careers span a wide variety of interests, including finance, nursing, pharmacy and communications. Volunteering is one of the best ways to determine the right career for you.
To learn more about becoming a student volunteer, please read the following information.
All applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be an adult currently enrolled in higher education
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 with proof of unofficial transcripts
- Recommendation form filled out and submitted in a separate sealed envelope
Expected Commitment
- You MUST be able to commit for a minimum of six months, with the option to continue long-term.
- Commitment is a minimum of one day per week — the shift is 3 hours, a total of 50 hours within 6 months of the date you began. Radiology and physical therapy students have different requirements; please inquire with Volunteer Services Department.
Application Process
- Complete the student volunteer application form.
- Include a copy of unofficial transcripts
- Include recommendation form filled out and in a separate sealed envelope
- Return the completed application to the Sharp Chula Vista Volunteer Services office.
- If your application is incomplete in any way, Sharp Chula Vista Volunteer Services is not obligated to notify you. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Applications must be signed where designated.
- You will receive notification that your completed application has been received. Those applicants who are being considered for an available position will be invited to an interview. Interviews are conducted on an ongoing basis. Those not being considered will receive written notification. It is not our policy to give feedback as to why an applicant was not selected for an interview.
Interview
During the interview, every attempt is made to match applicants with the appropriate service. Every effort is made to place you in your desired area, but Volunteer Services staff reserves the right to place you in a high priority position. You reserve the right to accept or decline that position.
Orientation
After being interviewed, if you are accepted into the volunteer program, you will be notified of the requirements for health clearance before attending a mandatory New Volunteer Orientation. At orientation, hospital and Auxiliary policies and procedures and volunteer expectations will be reviewed and you will have the opportunity to pay dues and purchase the required uniform.
Placement
Once Volunteer Services receives your health clearance from Employee Health, you will be scheduled to begin your training. After you complete three on-the-job training sessions, you will be assigned your schedule and may begin to volunteer.
