The Joint Commission Names Sharp Coronado Hospital a Center of Excellence

After a comprehensive application and review process, The Joint Commission has designated Sharp Coronado a Center of Excellence for total hip and total knee procedures, a distinction recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality and a commitment to a higher standard of service. Sharp Coronado is the only hospital in San Diego County to have received this recognition.

Specifically, the Joint Commission conducted an extensive review of the hospital's joint replacement programs, and designated it as a Center of Excellence for "Disease-Specific Certification in Total Hips and Total Knees."

"Joint Commission certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of clinical quality and service and demonstrates our hospital's commitment to and achievement of a higher standard of care."

The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies health care organizations and programs. Citing a dedication to clinical quality and patient-centered care, a surveyor who was part of the review process stated that Sharp Coronado “clearly has a team which is focused, competent and caring” and that “the service focus is clear.”

Sharp Coronado is the only hospital in San Diego County to receive this recognition, and the only hospital to offer state-of-the-art partial knee replacement surgeries (called MAKOplasty®) via the new MAKO Surgical robotic-arm technology. Sharp Coronado is also California's only Planetree Designated Patient-Centered Care Hospital, providing an innovative and exceptional health care experience to patients and their families.
