Getting Back Into the Swing of Things at Sharp Coronado Hospital

Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

For Lyn Perino, a Coronado resident and Sharp Coronado Hospital volunteer, her shoulder pain was restricting her from playing a weekly round of golf with her husband and girlfriends. When her shoulder pain got increasingly worse, she knew surgery was the only option to get her back on the course.

In February 2013, Perino underwent shoulder surgery. Soon after, she began her road to recovery with the help of the care team at the new Sewall Healthy Living Center at Sharp Coronado Hospital.

Located on the third floor of the hospital, the Sewall Healthy Living Center offers a full continuum of care with medical services, rehabilitation services, exercise programs and integrative therapies, such as massage and acupuncture. Staff members help individuals live their lives with dignity and in optimal health, heal to the highest degree of functioning possible and grow in all ways that have meaning for them.

"It’s our goal to help patients achieve their optimal health and well being," said Tom Dodsworth, a personal trainer at the Sewall Healthy Living Center. "Working alongside Lyn, we made sure to encourage questions, provide education and customize her visits based on her needs and abilities."

Dodsworth knew Perino wanted to get back on the golf course, so he designed a fitness program to help her strengthen her shoulder and regain a full range of motion. He showed Perino exercises that she could do at home with simple equipment like a medicine ball and dumbbells that would allow her to continue the healing process.

"I was impressed with the collaboration that took place between my orthopedic surgeon, care manager, physical therapist, personal trainer and massage therapist," Perino said. "They created a personalized plan to help me recover quicker."

Perino credits physical therapy, personal training and massage therapy for helping her stay active.

"Even though it was hard at times, I’m glad I stuck with it because it has absolutely changed my life for the better," she added.

Today, Perino continues to exercise, work with her trainer and get massages at the Sewall Healthy Living Center, and is enjoying being back on the golf course again.
