Precision Technology for Hip Replacements Comes to Sharp Coronado

 Hip Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis in the hip

In 2011, Sharp Coronado became the first hospital in San Diego County to offer a robotic-arm assisted procedure for partial knee replacements, and kicked off 2012 by offering the same precision technology for hip replacements.

As people age, the cartilage in their hips wears down, leading to bone-on-bone contact that causes pain outside the hip, at the base of the spine, in the groin, or radiating from the thigh to the knee. The pain can become debilitating, preventing people from indulging in activities they enjoy.

With this technology, surgeons at Sharp Coronado can now perform total hip replacements that result in less pain, more natural movement and a quicker return to normal activities.

Using advanced software and a new component for the hospital’s robotic-arm assisted orthopedic system, surgeons create a 3-D map of each patient’s hip well before they begin the surgery. The digital model reveals the extent of bone damage, which helps physicians create a surgical plan and determine the correct implant size. During the actual procedure, the system provides real-time data that helps surgeons accurately position implants for a natural alignment.
