Patient-Centered Care

What sets Sharp Coronado apart from other hospitals?

A Focus on Putting Patients First
Patient-centered care promotes the advancement of putting patients first in the hospital setting by promoting patient comfort, dignity, empowerment and well being and transforming the way health care is delivered.

"When patients and their families come to Sharp Coronado Hospital, they are encouraged to become actively involved in their care," said Marcia Hall, chief executive officer of Sharp Coronado. "As a hospital committed to the Planetree model of providing patent-centered care, our goal is to humanize and demystify health care, and give patients more control in how care is delivered."

The Planetree Model of Care
Sharp Coronado began implementing the Planetree model of patient-centered care in 2002, and last year became one of the first five hospitals in the nation to receive the organization’s Patient-Centered Hospital Designation. Planetree is a coalition of more than 100 hospitals nationwide committed to improving medical care from the patient's perspective.

The Planetree approach to patient care is holistic and encourages healing in all dimensions — mental, emotional, spiritual, social and physical. It seeks to maximize health care outcomes by integrating complementary medical therapies such as mind/body medicine and therapeutic massage with conventional medical therapies.

"By implementing the Planetree model, we’ve designed a place where patients can receive the best care in a setting that seems more like a home than a high-tech healing institution," said Hall.

Access to art and nature is incorporated into the surroundings at Sharp Coronado. A recent remodel gives the hospital a more comfortable, homelike atmosphere with soothing colors, artwork, natural wood finishes and a healing garden. The addition of a labyrinth meditation path, which will break ground this fall, will provide another element for patients and their families to find comfort and peace.

Positive Outcomes
The patient-centered approach has led to increased patient satisfaction and decreased costs and length of stay, as evidenced by a five-year research study of orthopaedic patients by Susan Stone, RN, PhD, chief nursing officer and chief officer of operations at Sharp Coronado.

"Nursing and hospital administrators who seek to improve the inpatient hospital experience should consider implementation of the Planetree patient-centered model of care," said Stone. "Hospitals across the nation are striving to improve clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction and financial performance, and this study provides much needed verification that, by using the Planetree patient-centered model of care, the patients’ hospital experiences and clinical outcomes, as well as the unit’s financial performance, will effectively and efficiently improve."

Positive results of patient-centered care can also be seen in Sharp Coronado’s Emergency Department. Quality of care, short wait times and a focus on meeting patient needs helped to place the Emergency Department in the top 1 percent nationally for patient satisfaction for the past five years in a row.*
