Meet a Pet Therapy Dog
Skeeter is a registered therapy dog who began volunteering at Sharp Coronado Hospital in February 2008. He visits patients, family and staff every other Monday, and brings smiles their way. His philanthropic participation earned him a Pet Therapy Award at the October 2008 Planetree Conference.
About Pet Therapy
At Sharp Coronado Hospital, we’ve designed a place where patients have control over how their care is delivered, and an environment that seems more like a home than a high-tech healing institution. Pet therapy brings comfort to patients, and helps them feel at ease in the hospital environment.
Pet therapy stimulates the senses and promotes restfulness and peacefulness in a patient’s surroundings. Pets have a special way of reaching people, and offer unconditional love and acceptance in every visit. Their interactions are one part of Sharp Coronado’s dedication to personalize, humanize and demystify the hospital experience for patients and their families.
A Friendly Volunteer
Skeeter received a Spirit of Planetree Pet Therapy Award — which weighs more than he does! — for bringing companionship and happiness to patients as a hospital volunteer. Though small, he provides a lot of joy and is very friendly to everyone he meets.
More about Skeeter
Skeeter is a five-year-old black and tan Pomeranian. In addition to his visits to Sharp Coronado, he helps at Sharp Memorial Hospital and visits a children's reading group at the public library. He is owned and loved by Tammee and Dan Felix who are both Sharp employees. Skeeter has received the Canine Good Citizen Certificate and Rally Novice title, and is currently training to compete in rally and obedience trials.
