Sharp Coronado Among Five Hospitals Nationwide Recognized for Care

Hospital recognition for advanced patient-centered care.

Sharp Coronado is one of just five hospitals nationwide to receive the Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital Designation

In 2007, Sharp Coronado Hospital was honored as one of the first five hospitals nationwide to receive the Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital Designation for meeting the stringent criteria developed by Planetree, a nonprofit organization at the forefront of the health care industry’s patient-centered care movement.

This designation is acknowledged by The Joint Commission, and is one of the series of national awards and honors received for Sharp Coronado’s patient-centered health care model and widely recognized health care leadership.

To receive the Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital Designation, Sharp Coronado had to meet or exceed minimum practices that patients would expect to find in a patient-centered health care environment. As part of the designation process, leaders at Sharp Coronado were required to demonstrate that key patient-centered policies are in place, including nonrestrictive visiting hours and an open medical chart policy; that staff at all levels are involved in the implementation of the Planetree model; and that the hospital’s physical environment is a healing one engaging all of the human senses. In addition, designation status requires the institution to meet or exceed national performance benchmarks for quality, safety and patient satisfaction.

In addition to receiving Planetree designation, Sharp Coronado Hospital was featured in the best-selling book Boom!: 7 Choices for Blowing the Doors Off Business-As-Usual by Kevin and Jackie Freiberg. A section of the book is focused on the hospital’s unique approach to health care, patients and employee empowerment.
