Spirit of Planetree Awards

The Spirit of Planetree Awards were created to promote patient-centered care by publicly recognizing individuals who personalize and demystify the health care experience for others, as well as programs and services that support extraordinary achievement in patient-centered care.

In 2008, Sharp Coronado Hospital was honored with five awards for the following:

• Caregiver Award
  Harriet Sangrey, administration and patient relations manager, received a Caregiver Award for the many traits that she exhibits every day, in addition to her commitment to practicing the Planetree model of care. Harriet was nominated for her warm and open heart, appreciation for patients, belief in the team, support of the community, integrity, honesty and great love for everyone whose life she touches every day.
  
  
• Evidence-Based Practice Award
  After completing a five-year retroactive evaluation of the Planetree patient-centered model of care and its impact on inpatient quality outcomes, Susan Stone, chief nursing officer and chief executive officer at Sharp Coronado, was able to provide data to support use of the Planetree model. The results of the study  indicated that the Planetree patient-centered model of care positively impacted patient satisfaction, length of stay and cost per case. The patient-centered model of care improves the inpatient hospital experience.
  
  
• Laura Gilpin Kindness Award
  The Wellness + Health + Safety Program, an initiative with a goal of improving the long-term health and wellness for all employees, received the Laura Gilpin Kindness Award for doing extraordinary work in caring for its caregivers. The program was recognized for its intent to cultivate kindness and caring for those who give so much of themselves to care for others. Elements of the program include encouragement of employees to walk 10,000 steps a day, reach or maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI), drink 64 ounces of healthy beverages daily, maintain personal fitness and practice workplace safety, among others.
  
  
• Pet Therapy Award
  Skeeter, a Pet Therapy dog, brings smiles and happiness to every patient that he greets. Though he is a very small dog, Skeeter receives a warm response when he provides company during his rounds.
  
  
• Physician Champion Award
  Roger Oen, MD, a board-certified family physician at Sharp Coronado, is a true advocate of the Planetree concept and believes in the benefit of using complementary therapies when treating patients. Dr. Oen received the Physician Champion Award due to his role as an advocate and mentor, his dedication to patients and his commitment and compassion to his profession. He strives to provide open communication and education to patients and their families.
