 Teddy Bear Clinic

Sharp Coronado’s Teddy Bear Clinic, an annual fall event, allows children to learn about care and safety of hospital procedures in an interactive environment.

About the Event
 Usually held near Halloween, the Teddy Bear Clinic invites children to dress in costume and bring their favorite doll or stuffed animal to Sharp Coronado Hospital. Medical staff register the “patient” (doll or stuffed animal) and children follow along as the toy passes through examination, medication, suture, splint and cast stations.

As children are shown the equipment and the procedures are demonstrated, the children are encouraged to talk about their own experiences and ask questions. Sharp Coronado Patient Relations Department and Emergency Department staff, members of the Coronado Police and Fire departments and volunteers also participate in the event. An ambulance, fire truck and police car are on site and can be explored by children and their families.

Mission
The mission of the Teddy Bear Clinic is to promote education and safety so that children will not be fearful of a hospital visit. By taking their toys through a series of pretend medical treatments, children are familiarized with the roles of doctors and nurses, becoming more comfortable with the medical environment and less anxious should they ever need medical attention.

Community Recognition
 In 2008, the Teddy Bear Clinic was recognized by the Coronado Human Relations Commission with the “Take My Hand, Coronado” Peacemaker Award in the health and human services category. The award recognizes the promotion of peace in human relationships and praised the Teddy Bear Clinic for its value in modeling and promoting peaceful communication and conflict resolution.
