How Does ECP Work?
Glaucoma is a degenerative eye disease that damages the optic nerve with fluid buildup and pressure. It is a leading cause of blindness, affecting an estimated 6 million Americans.
Sharp Coronado Hospital obtained the state-of-the-art endoscopic laser for the treatment of glaucoma in 2006. “ECP gives us more options than ever to treat advanced glaucoma,”said Dr. Glenn Cook, a Sharp Coronado-affiliated physician who is the first ophthalmologist in San Diego to perform ECP in a hospital setting.
While traditional glaucoma treatments use some combination of eyedrops, medications and conventional surgery, ECP treatment eliminates the need to use expensive medications on inconvenient dosage schedules.
More than 60 percent of patients who receive ECP treatment eliminate their medications altogether, and 80 percent are able to decrease their medications significantly.
