Choosing the right socks is important to prevent foot ulcers, which are common among people with diabetes.
“Most patients are very concerned with proper shoe gear when they have diabetes, but ignore the importance of socks and stockings in preventing lower extremity problems,” said Alan Jones, DPM, Sharp Rees-Stealy Otay Ranch Podiatry Department. “I always remind my patients to think about their socks and hosiery in addition to footwear.”
Here’s what you should look for when purchasing socks or hosiery:
- A good fit: Avoid socks or hosiery that are tight around the top
- Any color you prefer: Some people with diabetes wear white socks so they can quickly spot blood or leakage from a sore or blister but any color sock is fine — as long as you’re careful about inspecting your feet daily
- Light padding: Padded socks help reduce the pressure on your feet when walking; just make sure your shoes are large enough for these thicker socks
- No seams or soft seams: Rough seams can irritate your feet, causing sores
- Synthetic material: Acrylic and other synthetic materials pull sweat away from your feet — dry feet are less likely to develop fungal infections
