Diabetes Tip: Diabetes and Pregnancy

The key to a healthy pregnancy for women with diabetes is keeping blood sugar levels in a healthy range before and during pregnancy. Follow these tips to help you plan to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

  • Consult your primary care physician, OB/GYN and diabetes educator before you become pregnant. It is a good idea to be in good blood sugar control three to six months before you plan to get pregnant.

  • During pregnancy keep your blood sugar level in excellent control. Consult your diabetes educator to help you develop a detailed healthy meal and exercise plan to help keep your blood sugar in control.

  • Keep a diary of what you eat, how much you exercise and your blood sugar levels throughout the day. Remember to bring this to each appointment with your diabetes educator and physician so they can monitor your progress and modify your meal and exercise plan if necessary.
