Eating Right to Prevent Diabetes

Patti Ennis, RD, clinical nutrition program manager at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center recommends the following to prevent diabetes:

In order to prevent Type 2 diabetes, a healthy diet, in addition to weight loss and exercise, is an important part of overall good health. A healthy diet includes reduced total fat intake, especially saturated fat, and increased consumption of whole grains and fiber, especially fruits and vegetables. In fact, a recent analysis from the Nurses Health Study found that women who ate the most leafy greens — including spinach, kale and lettuces — were less likely to develop diabetes over 18 years.

Healthy Eating Ideas

  • Choose lean meats such as chicken and turkey
  • Choose nonfat dairy products
  • Choose whole grains over processed grains
  • Cut back or eliminate high-calorie snack foods and dessert
  • Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables
  • Include fish in your meals two to three times per week
  • Watch the portion size of all foods
