Diabetes Tip: How to Manage Nutrients in Your Diet

Making healthy and nutritious meal choices can be difficult. Follow these eating tips to help manage the nutrients in your diet.

  • Aim for 3 to 4 servings of carbohydrate-rich foods at each meal. Spread your carbohydrate-rich foods throughout the day for a more even blood sugar level.
  • Aim for 6 to 8 ounces of protein each day. Spread your protein-rich food throughout your meals and snacks.
  • Don’t go longer than five hours between meals or snacks.
  • Don’t save up carbohydrates from one meal to the next — use them or lose them.
  • Eat lean protein foods such as chicken, turkey or low-fat cottage cheese. Be careful of an excess of these foods because they can increase your cholesterol.
  • Look for light margarine, mayonnaise and salad dressing with 5 grams of fat or less and entrées with 10 grams of fat or less.
  • Look for snack foods, baked goods and cereals with 3 grams of fat or less.
