Education for people with gestational, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
The Diabetes Education Program at Sharp HealthCare is an outpatient education program for people with gestational, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The program, which is recognized by the American Diabetes Association, provides people with diabetes the skills needed to successfully self-manage diabetes and live a long, healthy life.
The program is taught by a registered nurse and dietitian. The first meeting is held in a group setting with subsequent follow-up meetings held on a one-on-one basis.
Classes are held at various times, including days, evenings and Saturdays and are offered in Spanish at certain Sharp facilities throughout San Diego. If space is available, spouses and family members may also attend at no additional cost.
Topics covered in the diabetes class include:
- Diabetes nutrition, food labels, dining out and the benefits of exercise
- Learning the different types of diabetes and diabetes management
- Long-term complications, diabetes medications and coping
- Overview of diabetes, acute complications and sick day management
Before beginning the Diabetes Management Program, each participant will receive an initial assessment with a registered nurse or registered dietitian to gather health information and discuss the areas of need for education. Additional one-on-one instruction may be provided for participants who need help meeting their goals.
The Diabetes Education Program is available at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, Sharp Grossmont Hospital, Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion and Sharp facilities throughout San Diego County via Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.
