Diabetes Tip: Starting a Safe Exercise Routine

Follow these steps to help you get ready for an exercise routine that is safe and enjoyable.

  • Before you start a new exercise routine, talk with your team of health care providers about which activities will be safe for you.
  • Choose which activities you would like to do and make an exercise plan. Determine activities and realistic starting points for yourself and take it slow in the beginning. Your activity should be challenging, but not overly difficult.
  • Have a plan for low blood glucose. Low blood sugar can be a side effect of long and strenuous physical activity. If low blood sugar is interfering with your exercise routine, try eating a snack or drinking a sports drink before your workout. It is also smart to carry a source of carbohydrate so you will be ready to treat low blood glucose.
  • Monitor your blood glucose response to exercise. Everyone’s response will be different so be sure to check your levels before and after exercise.
  • Stay hydrated during exercise. Drink plenty of water before, during and after activity.
  • Stay motivated by keeping track of your progress. Write down what activity and duration you have done each day and watch your progress as you get in better shape.
