Our guidelines will help you to determine the frequency and timing for testing your blood sugar levels. You will fall into one of these three categories.
| If... |
Then I need to... |
| I do not take pills for diabetes. |
Test my blood sugar level every other day. |
| I do take diabetes pills. |
Test my blood sugar level once a day, alternating between before breakfast and two hours after dinner. |
| I take insulin. |
Test my blood sugar at least twice a day, usually once before breakfast and again two hours after dinner. |
Keep these important guidelines in mind regarding your blood sugar levels:
- Before eating, your blood sugar should be 90-130.
- Two hours after eating, your blood sugar should be less than 140.
- If your blood sugar is less than 70, then it is too low. Call your doctor immediately.
You may experience low blood sugar symptoms after you start treatment because your body is accustomed to high blood sugar. It may take days or weeks for you to adjust to normal blood sugar after you start treatment.
