Flu Tracker: About Our Data

The Flu Tracker is based on incoming calls regarding seasonal flu to Sharp's Nurse Connection call center, an after-hours service for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group patients. The Flu Tracker is not tracking actual instances of diagnosis of the flu, but rather the volume of calls to the call center. In years past, tracking call volume has been a valuable tool for gauging the progress of flu in San Diego.

To create the Flu Tracker, we studied data from previous years to establish a baseline of call volume during the non-flu season, and then created ranges from there.

  • Normal range: Less than 128 calls per day
  • Slightly elevated: Between 129 and 149 calls per day
  • Elevated: Between 150 and 170 calls per day
  • High: More than 171 calls per day

The Flu Tracker is updated every Monday, based on the previous week's calls.
