Diagnosed at age 26 with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a rare cancer of the lymph nodes, Austin was treated at Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s David and Donna Long Center for Cancer Treatment. Austin received both cranial and intravenous radiation. After one year of therapy, his cancer was beaten. Just like the cars he drives on the track, he received maintenance treatment after the cancer was eradicated.
Now cancer free, Austin is still dabbling in the NASCAR circuit. However, most of his time is spent raising his two young boys with his wife. “I always knew I could kick [cancer] in the rear,” said Austin.
