Behavioral Health Outpatient Programs at Sharp Grossmont

In addition to its inpatient care, Sharp Grossmont offers several hospital-based outpatient programs that serve individuals dealing with a variety of mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, depression and bipolar or anxiety disorders. These programs are under the direction of a dedicated team of caregivers comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers who administer compassionate patient-centered care. Treatment is provided in a peaceful, gardenlike setting at the hospital.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Program —This is a 6-to-8-week program for people struggling with depression, bipolar or anxiety disorders. Patients will learn behavioral techniques and skills to take action to move past symptoms toward the achievement of important life goals. Patients are taught how to apply skills such as: mindfulness (objectively observing your thoughts while staying in the present), cognitive diffusion (recognizing negative self thoughts as merely being thoughts) and acceptance (a willingness to commit to taking steps toward valued goals even if this involves experiencing negative emotions).

Adult Mental Health Program — This program is for adults with acute and chronic disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar disease. Treatment embraces psychiatric rehabilitation to support the patient’s personal growth and well being. Group therapy sessions encourage hope, self-determination and empowerment to help patients heal. The program provides care and treatment for patients who require ongoing treatment without the intensity of hospitalization. Each patient receives a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and personalized, interdisciplinary treatment. Transportation may be available for those who qualify.

Bridges Program — This program is based on the Recovery Model and was developed for adults who have been given diagnoses such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective and bipolar disorder. Bridges is designed to provide hope and empower patients to fully participate in their ongoing recovery and achieve a maximal level of independence.

Dual Recovery Program — Designed for adults who have co-existing mental illness and chemical-use/addictive behavior disorder, the Dual Recovery Outpatient Program uses an integrated approach to help patients develop the functional skills they need to cope with these problems. Learn more about dual disorders in Mental Health.

Older Adult (Senior) Mental Health Program —This program is designed specifically for older adults who are 60 years of age or older experiencing challenging life transitions and age-related changes often associated with increased stress and the development of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. The Older Adult program empowers patients to manage their psychiatric illness and helps give them the opportunity to enjoy life and thrive in the future. Patients in this program will:

  • Cope in a healthy way with changes in health, transitions and losses
  • Develop a routine of enjoyable activities that supports and improves their quality of life
  • Learn skills to help understand and change unhealthy thoughts
  • Maximize communication and conflict-resolution skills
  • Use relaxation techniques to manage anxiety and improve sleep
