Electroconvulsive Therapy at Sharp Grossmont Hospital

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective treatment for severe depression, most often recommended when a patient presents serious side effects or does not respond to medication. ECT is one of the fastest ways to relieve symptoms for severely depressed or suicidal patients, as well as those suffering from mania, schizophrenia or other types of mental illness.

ECT is administered to the patient while under general anesthesia. Electrodes placed on areas of the patient's scalp deliver finely controlled electrical currents designed to induce a seizure within the brain.
