Our team of staff members and health care providers at Grossmont Plaza Surgery Center work together to ensure the best possible experience for your treatment and recovery.
Before Your Surgery
All Grossmont Plaza Surgery Center procedures are scheduled by your surgeon’s office. Please be sure to provide accurate main and alternate phone numbers for your presurgical instructions. Two to three days prior to your surgery, a registered nurse will contact you to review your general health status, verify your surgery and arrival times, provide you with your presurgical instructions and discuss any financial responsibilities. If we are unable to reach you directly, we will leave a recorded message.
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery, including water, candy, gum, mints and chewing tobacco
If your insurance plan requires special authorizations or referrals, make sure your surgeon’s office has obtained them
If your physician requested lab work or X-rays, make sure they are completed prior to your arrival
Make arrangements for a responsible adult who is 18 years or older to remain with you during your procedure and to receive home-care instructions and drive you home after your surgery, as you will be unable to drive yourself home
Please be sure copayments, coinsurance or cash payments are settled prior to surgery
If you have questions about your upcoming surgery, call the Grossmont Plaza Surgery Center at 619-740-4561, from 9 am to 4 pm, to speak with a registered nurse.

After Your Surgery
Depending on the procedure, you may feel some discomfort and/or nausea; if this is the case, please let your nurse know so we can ease your discomfort
Do not drive, drink alcoholic beverages or operate machinery for the first 24 hours following your procedure or while you are on any pain medication
Following your surgery, you will remain in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where nurses and the anesthesiologist will monitor your condition (an average stay ranges from 30 to 90 minutes)
Refer to your discharge instructions or call your physician if you have any questions regarding your surgery
Some of the medication you received during surgery may cause you to lose track of time; your nurse will help keep you oriented and answer any questions you may have
You should have an adult remain with you for 24 hours following your surgery
You will receive home-care instructions and may be escorted to your vehicle by wheelchair
You may require more rest or sleep than usual for one to two days following your procedure
You will receive a call from a Grossmont Plaza Surgery Center nurse to check on your condition the next business day after your surgery
Parents and Guardians
If your child is having surgery, bring a favorite toy to provide comfort. While you cannot be in the operating room during the procedure, you are welcome to join your child in the PACU to provide support in the recovery phase.
If you are not the parent, please bring completed custodian/guardian documents.
Visitors may enter Grossmont Plaza Surgery Center’s preoperative and discharge areas, but because of limited space, a maximum of two visitors are allowed at a time. Visitors are not permitted in the operating room or PACU.
