Dr. Peter Hanson, medical director, Sharp Grossmont Hospital
Dr. Peter Hanson
gained an interest in orthopedic surgery after undergoing knee reconstruction for a sports-related injury while attending Occidental College in Los Angeles. There he earned his bachelor's degree in biology and continued on to receive his doctorate from the University of California, Irvine Medical School, graduating with honors.
Dr. Hanson completed his residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center, during which he received the orthopedic department trauma award for his research. He published research on pelvic trauma in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and rotator cuff disease in the Journal of Orthopedic Research.
Dr. Hanson completed a fellowship in adult lower-extremity, total-joint reconstruction at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, where he spent a post-residency year performing surgery and conducting research in hip and knee replacements.
In addition to his full-time practice, Dr. Hanson has chaired and served on more than 15 committees, providing leadership direction for Sharp Grossmont Hospital. His membership on the board of directors continues through 2012.
Dr. Hanson served as chief of staff, chief of orthopedic surgery and for more than 10 years he served as the medical director of orthopedic surgery at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. He also held the associate medical director position at Sharp HealthCare, leading the Orthopedic Research Department and serving as principal investigator in several large-scale clinical trials. Dr. Hanson has presented at numerous lectures and seminars nationwide, educating orthopedic residents and surgeons on topics related to prevention of complications with total joint replacement surgery.
