The Sharp Grossmont Nurse Residency program is offered twice yearly with applications taken online in March and October. Orientation of nurse residents usually begins in July and February.
The Nurse Residency Program is committed to improving the new graduate nurse’s bedside clinical skills and promoting the development of confident nursing staff through mentorship and ongoing education. The goal of the program is to improve the quality of care, improve patient and employee satisfaction and enable the new graduate to create a commitment to the hospital and the nursing profession.
This exciting new program is designed to assist the new graduate nurse in the transition from a novice practitioner to an independently functioning nurse through team support of managers, trained preceptors and educators. This program allows the novice nurse an opportunity to build a level of competence and confidence, and strengthen clinical skills with the support of expert clinicians and educators who will nurture critical thinking.
Sharp Grossmont’s Nurse Residency Program is structured to cross-train new graduate nurses between acute care (medsurg) and progressive care units (PCUs). New graduate nurses build a variety of skills by working 3 to 4 months at a time on different units over the course of one year. By experiencing different units in the hospital, new graduate nurses and the leadership team can determine the best fit for the new graduate nurse based on their clinical skills and goals.
