As the busiest Emergency Department (ED) in San Diego, Sharp Grossmont Hospital implemented a new, streamlined process to manage the large volumes of ED patients that are treated. The process, Provider in Triage (PIT), has successfully enhanced patient flow and improved overall patient wait times.

ED patients with a sprained ankle, broken finger, sore throat — or pretty much anything where the patient can simply sit in a chair — will be treated at PIT. The process starts with a registered nurse who evaluates the patient. A physician's assistant or a nurse practitioner then examines, diagnoses, treats and discharges the patient — all without being assigned a bed.

Since the rollout of PIT, the patient's average length of stay has decreased by 19 minutes. In addition, door-to-provider time (the time in which a patient walks in through the doors to seeing by a provider) decreased by 17 minutes.

In addition to PIT, the ED has implemented a nurse and ER tech program in the ED lobby to enhance the patient's arrival experience. The patient or visitor is immediately greeted and assessed upon arrival, and immediately directed to the next level of care.

This unwavering dedication to quality patient care has earned the ED recognition as a Super Center Emergency Department by the Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance for treating more than 100,000 patients annually. Sharp Grossmont is among the nation's 4 percent of hospitals to receive this title.
