The IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal class is a certification course designed for licensed vocational nurses. It focuses on the legal aspects, theory and practice of IV therapy and blood withdrawal, as well as blood transfusions and total parenteral nutrition. The curriculum is approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).

Attendees are required to attend all five dates in the class series (36 hours, which includes nine hours for lab work) and participate in group discussions.

If you are a Sharp HealthCare employee, the text is available to borrow for the length of the course from the Sharp Rees-Stealy Training and Education Department.

If you are not a Sharp HealthCare employee, you will need to purchase the text.

Presenter Information

Classroom and laboratory experiences are instructed and supervised by California registered nurses (RNs), including Training and Education Department RNs and Urgent Care RNs.

Current Instructors

  • Leslie Dela Cruz-Torio, MSN, PHN, Ph.D. (c), RN, is an urgent care supervisor and research nurse for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. She is also a a former nursing instructor.

  • Meg Murphy, BSN, RN, is a cardiac nursing specialist for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.

  • Karen Rique, MSN, RN, PCCN, CDE, is a critical care and diabetic specialist for Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.

What to Bring

Lunch is not provided. Attendees may bring their own lunch or purchase food nearby. Attendees should bring a jacket as the room temperature varies, as well as a pen or pencil and notepad to take notes.

Course Recommendations

Registrant must be a licensed vocational nurse or RN. Registered nurses who are needing a refresher are welcome to attend.


The course is approved for LVNs by the Bureau of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Upon successful completion of the course, individual documentation will be submitted to the BVNPT for each participant. LVNs receive 36.0 contact hours from the Sharp Rees-Stealy BVNPT.

Registered nurses will not receive CEU credit, but will be given a certificate of completion at the end of the course.
