Warren Williams has a passion that adds much to his health, happiness and well-being. Unfortunately, fly-fishing — what he calls a “spiritual experience” — was also causing him great pain.
Williams had developed bone spurs and osteoarthritis in his shoulder joint, which, along with the pain, had also led to decreased range of motion. To fix his shoulder and allow him to do what he most loves in life, he received a total shoulder replacement at Sharp Coronado Hospital.
The repair and post-surgery rehabilitation allowed him to return to nature, but the healing that took place was not just physical. The specialized care he received aimed for wellness of the mind, body and soul.
“When we’re talking about our patients healing, there is the physical healing, there’s the surgical site,” says Gia Wendt, RN, orthopedic program manager at Sharp Coronado. “But that is only one portion of the healing process. We’re not just healing the joint; we’re healing the spirit of that person.”
Wendt recognizes that every patient is different, but their goal for each remains the same: eliminate pain; regain lost strength; achieve and maintain full, pain-free range of motion; and, ultimately, return to normal activities, including sports.
“Every patient is an individual, and each patient has a particular set of goals ranging from the desire to live a pain-free life and the ability to perform activities of daily living independently, to having the ability to get down on the floor to play with grandchildren or getting back to participating in sports,” she says. “Motivation of a patient to recover with the goal of getting back the ability to do the things they love most in life plays a key role in a patient’s recovery.”
Along with a patient’s motivation, the quality of care they receive contributes to recovery. As a Planetree partner hospital, Sharp Coronado employs a patient-centered model of health care focusing on healing in all dimensions — physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual healing.
“The focus of healing is on the individual as a whole person, which allows us to reach our goal of returning patients to a higher quality of life than they came in with,” Wendt says. “The Planetree philosophy promotes healing by empowering patients and families to partner in their health care, and decreases stress and anxiety by demystifying the unknown related to surgery, recovery, pain management and the healing process.”
Sharp Coronado Hospital believes that a healing environment is vital to the healing process. From a color scheme and art decor scientifically found to reduce stress and anxiety by providing a calming effect, to a variety of integrative therapies available, a patient’s overall experience at the hospital contributes to the healing process. Patients can choose to receive massage therapy, aromatherapy, music therapy or acupuncture — all of which are proven to reduce stress, achieve relaxation and reduce pain.
“Living with chronic pain and the debilitation of severe osteoarthritis prevents patients from doing what they love most in life,” says Wendt. “By replacing an osteoarthritic joint to eliminate the chronic pain, and rehabilitating the joint to regain the strength and mobility needed to live an active lifestyle, you’re not just healing a joint; you’re healing the spirit within that person. You’re giving the patient an opportunity to return to doing what they love, what makes them an individual and what makes that person feel alive.”
