Sharp HealthCare is known for healing hearts, but it can also bring them closer together. Meet two of the many committed couples who work at Sharp.
Kathy and Ray Deitchman
In 1987, Sharp Rees-Stealy was developing a new medical center in Chula Vista. That expansion laid the foundation for more than a new South Bay facility. Kathy and Ray Deitchman met and worked closely on the project, and have been together ever since.
Kathy, a 41-year Sharp Rees-Stealy employee, was the Chula Vista F Street site manager. As the manager of facilities and engineering, Ray worked closely with Kathy on the new site. The couple married two years later and created a blended family of two boys and two girls, aged 10, 12, 13 and 15.
Twenty-six years later, the couple enjoys attending Sharp HealthCare's All-Staff and Leadership Development sessions together. Kathy says their work schedules prevent them from carpooling or crossing paths on a regular basis, but working for the same employer gives them a greater understanding of their day-to-day work life. "Whenever I have an event, Ray always wants to know how it went. It is interesting to hear about the projects he works on and it is really nice to debrief with someone who knows the organization," says Kathy.
Ray, who just marked 30 years with Sharp Rees-Stealy, says one of the aspects he most enjoys about being a "Sharp couple" is all the mutual friends they have made throughout the years. "We have developed so many great relationships over the years, and I'll always be grateful that work brought us together," he says.
Tom and Dayma Phillips
Sharp Health Plan's married couple, Tom and Dayma Phillips, will celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary this spring. They met through a mutual friend and never worked together until at Sharp, though they remain in separate divisions. Tom is a digital producer in business development and Dayma is an underwriter in finance.
At Sharp Health Plan for three years, Tom affirms the benefits of working with his spouse, such as the savings on gas from carpooling and spending lunchtime together. "Our departments work together a lot. It's great to have a deeper insight into a different department that I might not have without the relationship with my wife," says Tom.
Dayma, a 17-year veteran of Sharp Health Plan, echoes the same sentiments. "It's awesome working together as well as working for a company we both believe in."
They are also raising a son, Orion, who is 16 months old and on occasion, Tom and Dayma will bring him in for a surprise visit to the office — to the delight of employees.
