Advanced PET/CT Imaging at Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion
The Outpatient Imaging Center at Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion uses an advanced diagnostic imaging system known as 64-view PET/CT. This procedure provides an unprecedented level of detail in images of tissues and organs. The technology is particularly valuable for large patients, whose body size makes detection and diagnosis of tumors more difficult.
The system combines a PET (positron emission tomography) scan to image how organs and tissues are working, and a CT (computed tomography) scan to create cross-sectional images of a patient's bones and soft tissue. The unit takes 64 views — known as "slices" — in one rotation. PET/CT procedures show organ function and also the physical details of that organ in one scan.
Our PET/CT system also uses Time-of-Flight, an advanced PET imaging technology that can reduce patient's radiation exposure by up to 66 percent. Time-of-Flight PET/CT is highly sensitive and able to detect small lesions previously "unseen" by non-Time-of-Flight systems. Sharp HealthCare is the first health care organization in San Diego to offer Time-of-Flight PET scans to patients.
The PET/CT system has two doughnut-shaped rings, separated by a two- to three-foot open space. Patients are positioned comfortably on a table, depending upon the area of imaging interest. The patient lies still on the table surface while the PET/CT scanner rotates around the patient and the table moves through each doughnut-shaped ring. The scan information is sent to a computer for review and interpretation by a radiologist.
PET/CT Time-of-Flight imaging is efficient and highly accurate — an entire scan can be done while the patient holds his or her breath for less than 15 seconds.
