Employees discuss balance between work and life

Colleen Murphy, RN: What we do in health care is very rewarding, but it’s very intense. We require time off. We require balance in our lives. And Sharp recognizes that. And they’ve given us all kinds of avenues to help us find that balance with varying work schedules and float pools, and very innovative ways to look at scheduling for our staff, so they can have time with their families, with their personal goals and with their lives. And then come to work refreshed and ready to work.

Lien Giang, Pharmacist: I like the flexibility of working here. It allows me to do a lot of the things that I enjoy doing outside of work.

Megan Mueller, Hand Therapist: I love my schedule. I work from Tuesday through Friday and I have Mondays off.

Lien: The scheduling we work 4-10, and so I get 3 days off a week. Because I’m allowed to rotate through a lot of areas, I get to continually apply the skills that I’ve learned.

Megan: I get to do what I love to do, which is to help people. And then those four nights a week I also have balance to be able to do whatever I want to do.

Lien: Some of the evening schedules allow me to do activities during the day that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.

Colleen: Sharp has a very unique program called the Staffing Resource Network, the SRN. And what that is, is a group of clinical and nonclinical staff that work for Sharp but have very flexible work schedules. They can work at varying facilities, hospitals, clinics, they have varying shifts, varying staffing patterns.

Katie Zielinski, RN: I can move between Urgent Care and ER in different facilities like here in Coronado or in Chula Vista, or at Memorial, and work shifts wherever there are needs.

Colleen: It really gives staff freedom over their schedule and control of what they’re doing in their own work life.

Katie: It offers a great amount of flexibility.

Colleen: There are people that love that variety, and this really addresses that type of personality that loves the change and variety and the opportunity to learn at different settings throughout the hospital.

Katie: I like to take advantage of being in San Diego.

Megan: I love to hike, I love to run, I love to travel.

Katie: Hiking and swimming and beach and surfing, and everything.

Megan: I like Sunday nights, because I don’t, the next day I know I can sleep in a little bit.

Katie: It’s nice to be able to plan around events. I can plan my own schedule.

Colleen: We really attract the best. We attract people that really want to make a difference, that have a purpose to their work. And one way that we continue to attract that type of employee is through our benefit package. We have everything from educational reimbursement, we have a wonderful medical/dental/vision plan. We have a Sharp Saver Retirement Plan. One of the things I really like is we offer a continuing education at every facility. You can get all your continuing education units where you’re working. It makes me very proud to be able to offer that to a new employee, because it’s so comprehensive. All of these innovative scheduling concepts, the way we allow our staff to have control over their work life, really is part of our whole concept of the best place to work, best place to practice medicine and best place to receive care. If you’re happy and satisfied with what you’re doing, it really permeates your job and your life. It’s the reason many people stay.
