The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sharp Mary Birch provides evidence-based developmental care designed to improve outcomes in premature babies, or preemies, by maintaining an environment as close to that of the womb as possible. Mimicking the womb has a variety of health benefits for preemies, including helping normal brain growth in babies born as early as 23 weeks gestation.
Developmental care includes:
- Low lighting that is further dimmed at night to mimic baby's natural circadian rhythms
- Noise-reducing features including acoustic tiles
- Music therapy, with instruments timed to baby's respiration and heartbeat, part of our Arts for Healing Program
- Swaddle bathing to reduce stress and imitate compact womb environment
