Sharp Mary Birch Unveils New “I’m a Sharp Baby” T-Shirts

New design freshens the popular keepsake, which dates back to the early '50s.

SAN DIEGO — The iconic “I’m a Sharp Baby” T-shirts given to babies born at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns are getting a completely new look. Since 1954, the Sharp Mary Birch Auxiliary, a volunteer organization, has given a T-shirt to each of the estimated 8,000 babies born at the hospital each year. Until now, there have only been a few slight variations on the general design of the shirt, which includes the phrase “I’m a Sharp Baby” and occasionally a picture of the stork that has become an unofficial symbol for the hospital.

In time for Sharp Mary Birch’s 20th anniversary this fall, the Auxiliary will debut a new shirt that replaces pink and blue details with a modern palette of light green and peach on a white tee. The artwork features a stork delivering an irresistible bundle of joy.

Generations of San Diegans have been welcomed into the world with one of our ‘I’m a Sharp Baby’ T-shirts,” said Trisha Khaleghi, senior vice president and chief executive officer of Sharp Mary Birch. “When people hear that I work at Sharp Mary Birch, many comment about their fondness for our tradition of gifting families with the T-shirt. The shirt is a little token of our appreciation that they selected us as their hospital.”

The popularity of the baby tees was one of the factors in the creation of a special Facebook fan page called “I am (or had) a Sharp Baby,” where fans are encouraged to share photos of their babies donning their Sharp Mary Birch shirts.

“We encourage families to post their baby photos, and expect that some longtime San Diegans will have one of each of the T-shirt designs in their collections,” said Khaleghi.
