New technology allows lens implant to adjust to allow for near and far vision.
The Sharp Vision Laser Center at the Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion was one of the first medical facilities in the country to implant the AcrySof® ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens (IOL) from Alcon, Inc. The revolutionary implant allows patients to see both near and far without the aid of corrective lenses.
Currently, refractive or LASIK surgery corrects either near or far vision, while the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL corrects both through a process that works much like a telescope. The process, called apodization, forms the lens so that it sends optimal light to both near and distant focal points, providing a full range of quality vision.
Richard Leung, MD, ophthalmologist at the Sharp Vision Laser Center, was among the first physicians in the nation approved by Alcon to conduct the surgery. The surgery is done with a topical anesthetic and only takes between 8 to 10 minutes. Patients are able to go home shortly after the procedure and usually begin enjoying clearer vision by the next day.
