Offering diagnosis and treatment.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of severe vision loss among people over 60, affects an individual's central vision. Though people rarely go blind from this disease, AMD can make it difficult to read, drive or perform other daily activities that require fine, central vision.
Sharp offers diagnosis and treatment for both dry and wet AMD. A visual acuity test (eye-chart test), pupil dilation, the Amsler grid (checkerboard grid) and fluorescein angiography (retina photographs) are used in the analysis of AMD.
Though treatment is not available for dry AMD, a wet AMD procedure may include photodynamic therapy (PDT). PDT, which is a laser treatment for the disease, is a high-energy beam of light that is aimed directly onto the leaking blood vessels to deter further leaking.
