Not all cancers are hereditary, but for those patients who are concerned about inherited cancer risk, cancer genetic counseling can identify patients and families at increased risk for specific types of cancers.
As genetic counselors, we promote awareness for patients, families and their providers; create a specific and unique screening regimen; and further cancer prevention practices.
Why Choose Us?
- Our genetic counselor understands how to best assist patients in interpreting new genetic information and making decisions in light of risk information.
- Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion is one of the few hospitals in San Diego with a cancer genetic counselor who specializes in cancer risk
How It Works
You may ask your primary care provider or oncologist if a genetics referral is appropriate based on your history. A patient should expect to provide significant health and family information in advance of a 90-minute initial session with a genetic counselor.
During the initial session, the patient will receive an explanation of any appropriate genetic tests and the likelihood that these test results will reveal hereditary risk. Not every patient will proceed with genetic testing.
If testing is performed and a follow-up visit is necessary, results will then be provided and counselor and patient will discuss possible development of a screening/prevention plan. Patients who have significant hereditary risk can expect to receive ongoing support and information from their genetic counselor.
Genetic counselors are uniquely qualified to deal with both technical and emotional aspects related to hereditary cancer risk. Our cancer genetic counselor, Brittany Burnett, MS, CGC, has years of experience in the field of inherited cancer risk, and is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. She is one of the few genetic counselors in the San Diego area with a specialty in cancer risk. She understands how to best assist patients in interpreting new genetic information and making decisions in light of risk information.
