The Heart of Care: A Guide to Person-Centered Compassionate Elder Care by Amanda Waring
While this book references England's health care system, the information and guidance is useful for all caregivers. The author encourages the reader to develop a "person-centered care" attitude with dignity, compassion and kindness to protect the patient's sense of self-worth. She encourages family, staff and health care provider to communicate with the individual from the heart, "to see me, to understand me, to involve me..." — whether the person will be cared for at home or in a care facility. One chapter is devoted to the tough times that are common with caregiving, with practical suggestions based on the author's own experience caring for her parents.
