The Cancer Institute at Sharp Memorial Hospital has board-certified oncologists with specialized training and experience in medical, hemotological, radiation, and surgical oncology. Each specialty area offers highly experienced nurse practitioners or senior nurse specialists who help coordinate care, provide comprehensive education and support after discharge as needed.

Dr. Robert Barone

Dr. Robert Barone, medical director, Surgical Oncology at the Cancer Institute 
Dr. Barone received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his medical degree from State University of New York at Buffalo Medical School. He completed his surgical internship and residency at the University of Illinois, and received a Master of Science in Surgery at the University of Illinois at the Medical Center. He completed a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the University of Illinois Medical Center.

Dr. Barone began practicing in 1972 and has held numerous Assistant and Associate Professor of Surgery positions with the University of Illinois College of Medicine and the University of California. He has won many medical honors, is board certified in surgery, and a member of numerous medical societies including the Society of Surgical Oncology, of which he served on its Executive Board. Dr. Barone is also a highly published cancer researcher.
 
Dr. Alfred Saleh, medical director, Outpatient Oncology at the Cancer Institute

Dr. Alfred Saleh

Dr. Saleh received his undergraduate and a Master of Science in Pharmacology degrees from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his Medical degree at Albany Medical College of Union University in New York and trained as intern and resident at the Albany Medical Center Hospital. Dr. Saleh, completed fellowships in Hemotology and Hemotology/Oncology at Albany Medical College and the University of California at San Diego.

Dr. Saleh has held Instructor and Clinical Associate Professor positions at Albany Medical College and the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine. He is a board certified oncologist, licensed in California since 1981, and is active in a large number of clinical oncology research studies.

Dr. Thomas Shiftan, medical director, Medical Oncology at the Cancer Institute

Dr. Thomas Shiftan

Dr. Shiftan received his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Virginia and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons respectively. He completed internship, residency, and fellowships in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Shiftan is a founder and trustee of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. He is the Medical Director for Oncology at Sharp HealthCare and helped start a number of Sharp programs including Clinical Trials, the collaboration in Bone Marrow Transplantation with UCSD, and the Sharp Breast Center. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California and is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology, practicing medicine in California since 1973.

Dr. Geoffrey D. Weinstein, medical director, Radiation Oncology at the Cancer Institute

Dr. Geoffrey Weinstein

Dr. Weinstein received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University and medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, and his Residency in Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. 

Dr. Weinstein is board certified in Radiation Oncology and is an active member of many medical societies including the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, and the American Society of Therapuetic Radiology and Oncology. He has been in practice in San Diego since 1995 and is a regular presenter on cancer topics.
