San Diego's Best. America's Most Beautiful. MAGNET®. Planetree.
The list of distinctions for Sharp Memorial continues to grow as it joins Sharp Coronado as California's second Planetree Patient-Centered Hospital. Planetree is an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that partners with health care providers to advance patient-centered approaches to care. It's an organization based on principles that are very closely aligned with The Sharp Experience — emphasizing compassion in health care.
This designation was years in the making. Sharp Memorial started its affiliation with Planetree in 2010 and has been working toward designation ever since. Among the initiatives Sharp Memorial Hospital adopted on its path to Planetree designation was creating an open medical record where patients can receive a daily summary of their care, welcoming families as Care Partners who are included in care decisions, and offering integrative therapies such as healing touch, aromatherapy and Reiki at the bedside.
Sharp Memorial is proud to be an affiliate of Planetree, a coalition of more than 100 hospitals worldwide that is committed to improving medical care from the patient's perspective. Sharp Memorial is the largest and most complex hospital in the world to achieve designation.
About the Planetree Model
Since its founding in 1978 as a not-for-profit organization, Planetree has been a pioneer in personalizing, humanizing and demystifying the health care experience for patients and their families. The Planetree Model empowers patients and families through information and education, and encourages "healing partnerships" with caregivers.
Planetree's approach is holistic and encourages healing in all dimensions — mental, emotional, spiritual and social, as well as physical. It seeks to maximize health care outcomes by integrating complementary medical therapies such as mind/body medicine and therapeutic massage with conventional medical therapies. Access to arts and nature are also incorporated into the healing environment. The Planetree Model recognizes the importance of architectural and interior design in the healing process. A growing body of scientific data points to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction as a result of design factors which are homelike, barrier free, support patient dignity and encourage family participation in care.
