Meet the Sharp Mesa Vista Chief Medical Officer

Sharp Mesa Vista has an active medical staff of 40 psychiatrists and an affiliated staff of more than 150 courtesy medical staff and allied health professionals. These professionals work together to design treatment plans that help patients with an array of behavioral disorders. The entire staff is deeply committed to eliminating stigma and to promoting the fullest recovery for every person.

Dr. Michael Plopper 
Chief Medical Officer
Sharp HealthCare Behavioral Health Services

Since 1998, Dr. Michael Plopper has been the chief medical officer of Sharp HealthCare Behavioral Health Services, which encompasses the psychiatric services at both Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital and Sharp Grossmont Hospital

He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1975, and received his psychiatric training at the University of Southern California (USC). Before coming to San Diego, he taught courses in physiology, geropsychiatry, psychiatry and behavioral sciences as an assistant professor at USC. 

Dr. Plopper is board certified in both psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry. Additionally, he has been the principal investigator in more than 150 clinical trials of psychotropic medications and performs clinical trials at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital for a variety of psychiatric disorders.

He is a past president of the San Diego Psychiatric Society and is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
