Health Tip: Keep Your Back Healthy
(HealthDay News) -- To help reduce your risk of a back injury, start with living a healthier lifestyle.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to help protect your back:
Get plenty of regular exercise. Alternate cardiovascular exercises with those designed to strengthen the back and abdominals.
Avoid gaining extra weight, which adds stress to the lower back and spine.
Don't smoke, which can lead to premature aging of the spine.
Practice good posture; stand, sit and lift objects appropriately.
