H1N1 Flu Cases at Sharp Hospitals

San Diego, Calif. – On June 30, 2009, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced that there were two H1N1 flu-associated patient deaths over the last week and that both occurred at a Sharp hospital. As reported, the patients, who also had additional underlying health conditions, included:

  • A 49-year-old female patient with flu-like symptoms who was admitted to Sharp Grossmont Hospital on Tuesday, June 23, and passed away later that day.
  • A 75-year-old male patient with flu-like symptoms who was admitted to Sharp Memorial Hospital on Monday, June 22, and passed away on Sunday, June 28.

In both cases, exposure to personnel and patients in the hospital was minimal. Prophylactic treatment and measures were provided or made available to exposed individuals.

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency continues to advise all residents to take necessary health precautions as they would during the regular flu season, and Sharp HealthCare encourages residents to remain diligent during the ongoing H1N1 influenza situation. These precautions include:

  • Avoiding large crowds if you are experiencing any flu-like symptoms
  • Covering your mouth when coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
  • Washing hands frequently and properly
